Methodology: How We Rank Schools and Report Data

Wage and outlook figures are quoted exactly as published by BLS with the survey year.

Which schools appear

A school appears on a state or city page when the U.S. Department of Education’s IPEDS survey shows it reported program completions in the health information, medical insurance coding, or medical billing family, which is the group of program codes (CIP) beginning 51.07. We deliberately exclude schools whose only match is an unrelated information-technology program code, even though some shared datasets map those to billing and coding. No school pays to be on an editorial list, and no school is removed for declining to advertise.

How editorial lists are ordered: the BOC Score

The BOC Score is a 0 to 100 composite computed by a single ranking engine shared with our other education sites. Advertising cannot move a school on these lists. If a number is not in the federal data, it is not in the score.

Universe and eligibility

The engine starts from the IPEDS-derived directory in our shared dataset. A school is eligible for a score only if it appears in the College Scorecard as currently operating. Scorecard inclusion requires Title IV participation, which requires accreditation by an agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Schools that fail that gate are not ranked.

On this site the list is then filtered again: only institutions with a CIP 51.07 completion appear on state and city pages.

Five indicators, five weights

Each indicator is converted to a percentile (0-100) within the school’s peer group, then combined with these weights:

Outcomes (graduation plus earnings) are 55% of the score. Net price is inverted: a lower published net price ranks higher on that component.

Peer groups, not raw numbers

Raw values are never compared across school types. Peer group is the institution’s predominant credential level in Scorecard: certificate, associate, bachelor’s, or graduate. A graduation rate that is high among certificate schools can be ordinary among bachelor’s schools; the percentile reflects that.

Missing data

When an indicator is missing, its weight is redistributed proportionally across the indicators that exist. We do not impute. A school is ranked only if it has at least one outcome indicator (graduation or earnings) and three indicators total. Schools below that threshold are listed: they appear after every ranked school, with no score, in alphabetical order.

As of the current engine run: 5,714 schools scored across the shared directory, 5,213 ranked, 501 listed, 358 ineligible or unmatched. Those counts are directory-wide, not CIP 51.07-only.

What the score does not include

• No sponsored placement. Partner widgets are a separate system.
• No reputation surveys, no editorial opinion, no “best” ranking.
• No pay by credential, no job-placement rate, no exam pass rate. Those are not in the federal school-level files we use.
• No programmatic accreditor weighting (CAHIIM and others). We name those accreditors in guides when relevant; they are not in the score.

Update cadence

Scores are recomputed when the Department of Education releases new College Scorecard data (typically annually) or when the IPEDS directory refreshes. The weights and rules on this page are the production values. If they change, this page changes in the same update.

Partner listings

Partner schools appear in the program-finder widgets. Esy labels those ads. Their order within the widget is set by a separate system and may reflect the compensation we receive. They are never mixed into the editorial list.

Wage and outlook data

All pay figures are from the BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics survey, May 2025, for SOC 29-2072 (Medical Records Specialists), the occupation that includes medical billers and coders. National and state estimates plus metropolitan-area estimates are on the salary pages. Projections are from BLS Employment Projections 2024-34. We quote the exact published values, state the year, and do not estimate figures BLS does not publish, such as pay by credential, pay by remote status, or a missing metro cell.

A machine-readable file of the national, state, and metro wage tables is at medical-records-specialists-wages-oews-2025.csv. BLS data is U.S. government work.

First-job wage, weeks to hire, and CPC-A duration are not BLS series. They will come from the practitioner survey once a wave is collected. Until then, coder voices quotes public posts with links. Those are not a table.

Exam content, eligibility, and renewal rules are summarized from the certifying bodies’ published materials and change over time. We link to AAPC, AHIMA, and NHA and tell readers to confirm current details there. We do not quote exam fees.
