Medical Billing Path Practitioner Survey

Key takeaway: BLS does not publish a new-graduate wage, weeks to first offer, remote-at-hire, or time to remove CPC-A. We will collect those from working billers, coders, and recent graduates and publish the sample, the method, and the limitations. We have not collected that sample yet. Nothing on this page is a pay figure.

This is the honest substitute for a named expert: a survey the organization owns, that you can audit.

What we will ask

• First-job wage (hourly or annual) and metro or state
• Credential at hire (CPC-A, CPC, CCA, CCS, CBCS, CPB, RHIT, none, other)
• Weeks from credential (or graduation) to first offer
• Remote at hire: yes or no
• How long CPC-A took to remove, if applicable
• Program type (certificate, associate, other) and published program cost as you remember it
• Setting of first job (physician office, hospital, billing company, other)

We will not ask for names, employers, or anything that identifies a patient.

How we will sample

Recruiting will run through public coder communities (including r/MedicalCoding), professional forums, and LinkedIn groups. That is a self-selected online sample, not a probability sample. It will over-represent people who use those forums. That limitation will sit next to every chart.

Target: 150 to 300 complete responses in the first wave, then annually.

How we will publish

• A methodology page (this page, updated) with dates, n, and the questionnaire
• Aggregate tables only
• An anonymised CSV of the microdata, with cells suppressed where n is too small
• No “average starting salary” presented as if it were BLS

Until the first wave closes, the only first-job stories on this site are attributed public posts. Those are individuals, not our survey.

If you work in billing or coding, or you finished a program in the last three years, contact us with subject “Survey” and we will send the form when it opens. You can also ask to be emailed when the wave opens and when the CSV is posted.

We will not sell that list. We will not add you to a school-lead widget.
