What the RHIT exam covers

As published by AHIMA, domains include data content, structure, and information governance; access, disclosure, privacy, and security; data analytics and informatics; revenue cycle management including coding and reimbursement; compliance; and leadership. It is a timed multiple-choice exam; confirm the current format with AHIMA.

If you only want to assign CPT codes in a clinic, this exam is broader than your job. If you want health information work that includes the record, privacy releases, and coded data, this is the map.

RHIT jobs and pay

RHIT holders work as health information technicians, hospital coders, data quality staff, and release-of-information specialists. BLS does not publish pay for the RHIT. The occupation that includes those roles, medical records specialists, had a median of $51,140 in May 2025 (10th percentile $37,000, 90th $81,150). Hospital HIM departments are the usual setting; physician offices more often hire on the CPC or CBCS.

Why accreditation is the gate

CAHIIM, the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education, accredits health information programs specifically. Two years, transfer credits, and the practicum calendar

Two years is a long time if all you needed was a CPC and a clinic job. It is the right time if you want HIM as a career, including a later bachelor’s. Ask whether the associate credits transfer into a CAHIIM-accredited bachelor’s at the same system before you start.

Parents considering this path: many programs are online, but the professional practice experience may still need daytime hours at a facility. Get that calendar before you enroll.
